Sunday Book Club - Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

Sunday Book Club - Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

Last week, during my workshop with Steven Kotler, my perfectly curated reading list got totally scrambled. :) Yeah, that’s what happens when you hang out with a bunch of interesting people.

I’m not fighting it, because in the end, I’m all about sharing the inspiration, finding new tools and hacks for us entrepreneurs.

That’s why we’ll go straight for the goodness of Blink, a book by Malcolm Gladwell. It is a fascinating concept of rapid decision-making and intuition. Considering that on average we have around 70,000 thoughts 🧐 during the day, where a big portion of it is related to business, it’s interesting to think about easier ways of finding solutions to our problems.

Blink will challenge you to consider thin-slicing, a method where even with very little information, you can come to a sound conclusion in a split second. It suggests that, in many situations, our unconscious mind can process information rapidly and accurately, leading to precise decisions.

I know. It's a big concept, and I would fight it in some cases -- especially big financial decisions where I need my evidence, time to think, time to consult.

But what if this works?

Here are couple solid quotes to get you ponder:

“We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction.”

“We live in a world that assumes that the quality of a decision is directly related to the time and effort that went into making it...We believe that we are always better off gathering as much information as possible an depending as much time as possible in deliberation. We really only trust conscious decision making. But there are moments, particularly in times of stress, when haste does not make waste, when our snap judgments and first impressions can offer a much better means of making sense of the world. The first task of Blink is to convince you of a simple fact: decisions made very quickly can be every bit as good as decisions made cautiously and deliberately.”

“Anyone who has ever scanned the bookshelves of a new girlfriend or boyfriend- or peeked inside his or her medicine cabinet- understands this implicitly; you can learn as much - or more - from one glance at a private space as you can from hours of exposure to a public face.”

Blink is basically embracing the power of intuition and learning to trust our gut feelings. Might not be exactly socially accepted, but keep in mind that nobody sees into our heads while we make our decisions.  🤯

So, what do you think?

Make it quick, make it the Blink style 😁 so you can still enjoy your Sunday!

Love, Hana ❤️
